Quality higher education is among
the Rockford area's prime assets. Forty-five institutions of higher
learning lie within a 75-mile radius. Rockford is home to a community
college, liberal arts college, a branch facility of a major university
and a medical college. Other colleges, universities and technical
schools are within easy commuting distance.
Rock Valley College is a 2-year
community college serving Winnebago and Boone counties and portions
of Stephenson, Ogle, McHenry and DeKalb counties. Through its
Technology Center, Rock Valley College works closely with area
manufacturers to provide training courses that benefit workers. The
center also provides management seminars, computer workshops and
other programs.
Rockford College is a fully
accredited, private, independent, coeducational institution located
on Rockford's east side. The college awards bachelor degrees in
arts, science, nursing and other areas of interest. In addition, it
offers graduate programs in education and business administration.
Northern Illinois University-
Rockford, also serves the education and training needs of the
Rockford-area community. It offers courses in business, education,
engineering and engineering technology, health and human sciences,
and liberal arts and sciences. Recently Rock Valley College and NIU-Rockford
have formed a cooperative bachelor's completion program. Programs
offered include Nursing, General Studies, Computer Science,
Industrial Technology, Child Development, Community Health and
Elementary Education. The center's staff is dedicated both to
students attending NIU classes and business clientele who rent
meeting rooms for training sessions and conferences.
Rockford area residents enjoy the
highest quality in medical care from 3 hospitals in town and others
in the area. The 3 in Rockford are the 339-bed Rockford Memorial,
296-bed SwedishAmerican and the 201-bed OSF St. Anthony Medical
Center.
Rockford Memorial Hospital is
part of Rockford Health System, which also includes Rockford
Clinic

and Rockford Health Plans. It also
has associated clinics in 14 area locations. The hospital
provides an asthma center, a children's medical center, a heart
center, mammography center, a regional perinatal center and a
rehabilitation center offering physical, speech and occupational
therapies. It is a Level I trauma center and operates the REACT
helicopter. In addition, it has a Level III neonatal intensive
care unit. With a medical staff of over 400 and a care team of
more than 2,800 employees, Rockford Memorial Hospital
meets virtually every patient need with skill and compassion.
SwedishAmerican Hospital is a
full-service, non-profit hospital serving the greater Rockford
region, northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. It is a teaching
hospital affiliated with the University of Illinois College of
Medicine and is the only hospital in northern Illinois to earn a Top
100 hospital designation and is the first health care institution in
the state to win the Lincoln Award for Excellence. Its cardiac
program was rated as one of the best in the nation by
HealthGrades.com.
OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center is
a 254-bed tertiary care facility located on a 109-acre campus in
Rockford. It is a regional medical center known for providing
pioneering care in its Level I Trauma Center, Regional Heart
Institute, Center for Cancer Care, Illinois Neurosciences Institute
and Women's Center. It operates Lifeline ambulance and emergency
helicopter services and is also a regional training center for
trauma nurses. With its $5.7 million, 14,000 square-foot emergency
department expansion, it strives to improve patient privacy, safety
and efficiency.
The Burpee Museum of Natural
History occupies 2 historic mansions and is home to "Jane," the
skeletal remains of a recently discovered dinosaur. Both the Ethnic
Heritage Museum and Swedish American Museum occupy historic homes as
well. The homes containing the Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum is also
listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Midway Village
and Museum Center features a re-creation of a turn-of-the-century
village. In all, the Rockford area is home to 10 museums, 12 art
galleries, 9 public libraries and more.
Opportunities in music range from
classics played by the Rockford Symphony Orchestra to the Phantom
Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps to our native rock group, Cheap Trick.
There are concerts by the Kantorei, the Singing Boys of Rockford who
are nationally heralded. Rockford's Mendelssohn Club is another
excellent source for classical music concerts, featuring nationally
acclaimed artists as well as the Club's own Mendelssohn Chamber
Orchestra.
Listed on
the National Register of Historic Places, the newly renovated Coronado
Theater hosts performances by the Rockford Community Concert
Association and Rockford Symphony, and includes top international
stars.
There are 4 community
theaters in the area, including Starlight Theatre on the campus of
Rock Valley College and Maddox Theatre at Rockford College.
