short trip from
busy Chicago through the scenic hills of northern Illinois.
Early settlers called Rockford the "Forest City" because of the
river valley's verdant woods. Today it's being called the "City
of Gardens." Money Magazine has named Rockford as one of the top
200 safest places to live in the country! It has also been
ranked among the 10 most affordable places to live!
Germanicus
Kent was living in Galena, IL, when he heard of the beauty of the Rock
River region in 1833. He vowed to visit the area at the earliest
opportunity, and on August 24, 1834, he did so. He arrived on the west
side of the Rock River that day, at a point now in the City of
Rockford.
The area's beauty
convinced them to stay. On April 9, 1835, Daniel Shaw Haight arrived
as one of the first settlers of Rockford's east side. As their
settlement gradually grew, Kent and Haight met on October 17 to try
and establish a name for the town. Dr. J.C. Goodhue suggested
"Rockford" at the meeting, inspired by the rocky ford on the river...
and the name stuck. |
